Aircon refrigerant checks and gas top-ups

Aircon refrigerant circulates in a sealed system; it is not normally used up like fuel. Poor cooling can have several causes, so diagnosis comes before a top-up.

A top-up does not fix a leak

If refrigerant is low, a technician should assess the cause and discuss leak testing and repairs. Adding refrigerant without addressing a leak can leave the problem unresolved. There is no universal schedule requiring every aircon to be topped up every one to three years.

What a technician checks

Use the correct refrigerant

R22, R410A and R32 have different equipment and handling requirements. They must not be mixed or treated as interchangeable. R22 is ozone-depleting; R410A has a high global-warming impact. R32 also has environmental and flammability considerations. Refrigerant work should be performed by a suitably trained technician, following equipment requirements.
